FROM THE PEOPLE

There must be puddin’ in the mix…

Written by Ben and Terra Maynes

There was this one night - at church camp…  When a young girl was stalking a young boy – wait - scratch that…  It was a young boy stalking a young girl – wait - they never told us how it really went, but I’m pretty sure Biz Markie was there. When they took that memorable picture together they had no idea they would change the course of history, or that Facebook would actually be a hit.

How will they change history you ask? Well if you do not know the answer I highly suggest you continue reading.

Fast forward to present day America: Obama is president, the elections are getting heated and Adam Sandler is still making movies.  But in one living room every few nights something much more old school is happening.  We are listening to one of the most unique duos in entertainment perform. What makes these two unique?  Only one of them has musical talent, but the other (Miss Glenda) has the most beautiful, radiating personality that makes you just want to listen to them both all night. John will sing a song then Glenda will take the show over as soon as he is done playing and all you can do is giggle!  Then John starts again and once again you are awestruck watching something truly amazing take place.  The way he crafts his music is in a hypnotic mixture that you cannot escape from.  He drags you in with the perfect hook and you feel this awesome excitement that you have to share.  Between the two of them, true happiness exudes and it’s freaking contagious.  He started out with an idea and a girlfriend and along the way he has done so much more.  He has made friends, developed a die-hard fan base and makes you believe that once again; together we can truly connect and take on the world.  I have never been so hyped about a band.  John, Glenda too, makes you want to be a part of something, something so simple that it only needs a living room as a birthplace.  So thank you John and Glenda!

Hope we get to see another “Old School Party in the Living Room” before he has “fully” replaced the Beibster.

Are We Related?

Written by Adam Thurman

Location: Salt Lake City, UT

I’m not going to lie, the day before, even hours before, I really didn’t understand what I had gotten my wife and I into when we agreed to have John Martin come to our home as part of his Old School Party in the Living Room Tour. We had invited a few friends over and the snacks were ready to go but we weren’t quite sure how this was going to work. It was kind of like going on your first date with a girl you met at some distant cousins wedding, excited for it to start but hoping that you weren’t somehow related.

When John and Glenda arrived they were nothing but smiles.  They quickly greeted everyone and started talking with everyone as if we were all old friends. Glenda took over the room with her upbeat personality as John was getting set up. It felt like we were just hanging out with some friends eating snacks and getting to know each other.  Once John started singing there was a slight change in the room but only to the point that the smiles were bigger.  The playful banter between John and Glenda made our small group laugh and feel their love as their story was told through songs that he wrote while inspired by her.  At times we were asked to sing along and John even asked one of our friends who played to share one of his own songs.  When John started playing “Old School Party in the Living Room” my 2 boys came running down the stairs and started dancing all over to the fun upbeat song. My favorite song was easily “Girls are Beautiful”.  I can’t wait for its release on iTunes so that I can put that in my everyday mix.  As we finished things up there wasn’t a single person that wanted it to end but their road to Boise was a long one and it was late.

Since me and my wife have been married we have had some great times together, but the night of our Old School Party in the Living Room is easily one of our most memorable. We can’t wait to do it again!

Memories To Hold Onto

Written by Jerry Hill, Director of Bear Foundation Communications

John Martin and Glenda Louise are like a modern-day Sonny and Cher, minus Chastity and maybe the biting sarcasm coming from Cher. This lovely couple made a home visit Friday night as part of Martin’s unique living-room tour that was inspired and encouraged by the former Baylor receiver’s mentor and friend, Garth Brooks.

John has a unique sound that’s influenced by the tunes of Tom Petty and writing of Bob Dylan. And it’s evident in his tunes like Wild Card and Words Left Unsaid that appear on his recently released first album, Maybe Today.

The idea for the home concert tour was born out of Wednesday night impromptu jam sessions at his home base in Nashville, “where we’d we pass the guitar around,” play songs and share lives. Far from the bright lights of large arenas or Vegas night clubs, John’s only props are an acoustic guitar and stool as he mixes in his songs with some banter and storytelling with his girlfriend, Glenda.

The muse for his song, Magazine Eyes, Louise is part promoter, part supporter and a key player in this unique format. They met 15 years ago at a church camp in Colorado, reunited about 14 months ago - “And no, we didn’t reconnect on Facebook,” she says - and have been inseparable ever since. There is a connection, a love, between the two of them that comes through loud and clear in Martin’s music and during the living-room concerts.

Ten minutes in, you feel like these two people have been a part of your life forever. At my house, which proudly served as the Waco stop for a tour that’s also included Des Moines, Iowa, St. Louis, Mo., Tulsa, Okla., and Dallas, the only people that John knew before that night were me and his college roommate, former baseball and football student trainer Ben Basden.

But by the end of the night, John had a new set of friends and fans. At a time when the music business is filled with carbon copies and cookie cutters, John has a unique sound and rich talent as a songwriter.

This is from his new single, “Old School Party in the Living Room”:

Old school party in the living room, no rules waking up in the afternoon                    Turn the music up loud dance around like James Brown                                                       If you lose yourself, lose yourself right now

For one special night, that’s what we did: We lost ourselves and made “memories we could hold onto.” Thanks again, John!
